How to Memorize Bible Verses Using Color Codes
Things You’ll Need:
- 2 index cards
- several different color highlighter pens
First, to memorize bible verses, take your first index card and write out the bible verse you want to memorize.
Next, look over your verse and see how many different categories you can break up the verse into. For example, if the verse mentions God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit, that will be one category. If the verse mentions a man or woman that will be another category. Sin will be another category. Actions will be a different category. Feelings will be another category. Find as many different categories as you can.
The next step to memorizing bible verses through color coding is to assign each category a color highlighter. You may need to use a color for more than one category, but it is better to have one color for each category. If you don’t have enough highlighter pens to do this, then use different colored crayons or colored pencils. On the back of your index card write out each category and the color that is assigned to it.
Now, highlight the words and phrases of your bible verse with the colors you assigned to each category. Recite the verse over and over to yourself. Count how many words and phrases you used on your first index card. If you used your highlighter to highlight a phrase, count that as one. On your second index card create as many spaces for words or phrases on your first index card. Highlight the spaces on the second index card with the same colors as the first card. For example, if you highlighted the first word on your index card with a pink highlighter, put a pink highlighter mark on the second index card.
Last, as you recite the bible verse to yourself you will associate the color to the word. It is much easier for us to memorize something when we can attach two things together. When you are ready to test yourself, take the second index card that just has the highlighter marks, and try to recall the verse, word by word, using the colors to trigger your memory.
