How to teach children to memorize Bible verses using a jump rope
Instructions
Things You’ll Need:
- Jump rope (long one)
- Bible verse
-
1Choose your verse
Choose your Bible verse. This game works best with a Bible verse that can be said rhythmically. Most verses will work.
-
2Practice saying it rhythmically
Come up with a rhythmic way of saying the Bible verse. This is the most important part but don’t worry if you can’t come up with anything poetic. All the kids need is to hear the verse in a way that sounds something like a jump rope rhyme. If you have a hard time, don’t be afraid to ask the students to help!
-
3Pick three students to jump rope
During class have everyone gather round. Choose students to be involved. Girls usually like to volunteer for jump rope so make sure and involve boys as well. Use two students to hold each end of the jump rope. Have a third student who will jump.
-
4Say the verse rhythmically
Now say the verse rhythmically while the student jumps. As the kids catch on, have them say it with you. If the student messes up, start over. Congratulate those who can successfully make it through the verse and make sure everyone gets a chance.

This will stick in children’s minds because of the rhythmic way the verse was said so have everyone participate in saying it.
-
6Have the teachers play!
If the game starts to die down and the verse hasn’t been memorized all of the way… spice it up! Have the teachers start jumping while the kids say the verse.
Tips & Warnings
-
Have fun. Adults who are having fun will help the kids to have even more fun.
-
Encourage everyone who says it whether they can jump rope or not.
-
This can sometimes backfire if the teacher isn’t careful. Make sure to make it exciting or a few kids who don’t like to jump rope can make the whole idea seem bad.
