How do you get started in kidmin? Roger Fields has some great ideas.
- Recruit energetic people.Dont wait for volunteers. Theyre not coming. Ask people to be on your team. Nobody ever volunteered for Jesus. He actively recruited them. Do the same. Actively build your team.
- Make your room functionally cool.Dont settle for a room that merely looks cool; make it functionally cool. Put cool stuff in place you can use, not merely look at. Any dcor, no matter how much money you spend, becomes humdrum in a few months unless you can use it to engage the kids in a learning experience. Get stuff that helps you play review games, illustrate lessons, etc.
- Give kids plenty to do.Kids want to participate. Use lots of skits, games, and music. If all you ever let them do is sit up straight and keep quiet, you will never fully reach them.
- Use hot music.Use praise and worship music thats easy to learn but currently popular. Kids feel insulted when you force music on them that makes them feel younger than they are.
- Teach Bible principles not Bible trivia.Nobody cares how many rocks David picked up before he whooped Goliath. They do care how a scrawny shepherd boy managed to kill the biggest bully in the Bible. Teach the principle behind the story. Be relevant.
- Let the kids know you care.Every kid needs love and far too few get enough from home. Talk to the kids and take interest in them.
- Communicate with parents.Talk to them. E-mail them. Call them. Let them know what you are doing for their children. They will love you for it. Just dont hold a bunch of time-wasting meetings.
- Organize a check-in/out system.Make sure you produce a safe place for parents to leave their kids.
- Boldly ask for the money you need.Childrens ministry is no place for the timid. Act like you believe in what you are doing. Ask for the money you need. Ask the pastor. Ask the board. Ask parents. You may not get what you want. But you will almost certainly not get what you need if you dont ask. Never apologize for wanting the best for the kids God brings to you.
- Ask God to do all the stuff you cant do.Ask God to work through you to touch the lives of kids for eternity. Ask Him to give you everything you need. Ask Him to work mightily through you. He loves prayers like that.
