POP 10: A SUPER BIBLE SCHOOL ACTIVITY FOR LEARNING THE 10 COMMANDMENTS
- bykatvincent
10987654321! Do you know all of the 10 Commandments? To tell you the truth, I didnt until I wrote a song for them. Once I did that, theyve been stuck in my mind ever since. So, I do encourage you to find a song on the 10 Commandments whether its mine or someone elses. But whether you have a song or not, you can play this fun Bible school activity called Pop 10. I think your kids will really like it.
Heres what you do:
For this game you will need at least 10 balloons. Inside each balloon put one number of 1 through 10 on a small piece of paper. Blow each balloon up and place them in a basket or bag. You will also need and index card with each childs name on it. Place these in a hat or bucket. You are now ready to play the game.
Introduce the 10 Commandments to your kids. You could do this through a song or a poster or straight from the Bible. However you choose to teach the 10 Commandments, do it in such a way that promotes the memory of each. Once your class feels comfortable with each commandment, divide them into 2 teams. Have them stand in 2 lines facing each other about 10 feet apart from each other.
Now teach your kids this fun little poem/chant:
Commandments, Commandments
There are 10 Commandments
Theyre found in the Bible. Its true!
(Shout) Its true!
Commandments, Commandments
There are 10 Commandments
God gave them to me and to you.
Help the kids get comfortable saying this poem while bopping one of the balloons back and forth between the lines. Once they have the poem down, you are ready to start the game.
Give one team one of the balloons out of the bag. Explain that they will bop the balloon back and forth between the 2 lines while reciting the poem. On the last word of the poem someone should hold onto the balloon and dont let it go until instructed. You, the teacher, will then pull out one of the index cards with a students name on it. That student will then pop the balloon and will have to give the commandment that fits the number which is inside the balloon. If he does this successfully, he will earn 100 points for his team. In addition to this, he can earn an extra 50 points if he is standing in the line that had the balloon on the last word of the poem. If the child does not give the correct commandment, he can ask a friend from his team for help. However, with each request for help, he loses 10 points from the possible 100. Play begins as before with a new balloon. The team with the most points wins.
Tips for Success:
You might want to draw or put down lines for the teams to stand on.
