A Whiny Road Trip

 

Characters: Dad, Mom, Eddie, Susie, and Kallie

Scene: Inside of car, driving to a vacation in the woods

 

Dad: What a great day to begin our vacation!

 

Mom: Yes, the sun is shining, the mountains look beautiful, and we finally get some fun family time together!

 

Eddie: Im bored!

 

Susie: Im hot!

 

Kallie: Susies crowding me!

 

Dad: Kids, I cant believe what Im hearing! Arent you happy to be on vacation?

 

Kallie: Yes, but it is taking soooooo long to get to the cabin!

 

Eddie: Yeah, and Im thirsty!

 

Mom: I brought plenty of snacks for everyone. Susie, can you reach the cooler?

 

Susie: (sighs) I suppose, but Eddie should have to get it hes the thirsty one.

 

Eddie: Fine, Ill get it. (Grunts and groans as he pushes the other kids to reach the cooler.)

 

Kallie: Hey! Watch it! Get your elbow out of my face!

 

Susie: Aaaiieee! You dripped ice water down my back!

 

Eddie: (sarcastically) Well, you said you were hot.

 

Mom: Kids! What is the matter with you? Schools out, we are on vacation, you have plenty of snacks, and yet you are doing nothing but complaining!

 

Susie: Well, its just that these two clowns are hogging all the air conditioning and not being very nice to me.

 

Kallie: Thats because you took the red bowl I wanted for breakfast this morning.

 

Dad: Kallie, instead of complaining about not getting the bowl you wanted, you should be thankful you got a nice, healthy breakfast to eat. Susie, you should be happy we have warm weather instead of snow! Now, can we please just enjoy the beautiful scenery of Gods creation outside?

 

Mom: Eddie, will you please stop kicking the back of my seat?

 

Eddie: But Im bored!

 

Mom: Why dont you look for bears or moose out the window?

 

Eddie: (whining) OK, since Susie wont share her PlayStation with me.

 

>>Continue quietly for a few moments as the family drives along.<<

 

Kallie: Im hungry. I want some gummy bears.

 

Mom: Kallie, you shouldnt have any candy right now. I packed some nutritious snacks.

 

Kallie: (Looking around.) Awwwww, I dont want this stuff!

 

Susie: Carrots, apples, trail mix? Thats not any good!

 

Dad: I brought beef jerky too.

 

Kallie, Susie, and Eddie together: YUCK!

 

Dad: These foods are good for you, and theyll give you lots of energy to play at the cabin.

 

Eddie: Yeah, but I dont want that food, I want something different.

 

Kallie: Are you going to let us play in the creek when we get there?

 

Mom: No, not tonight. It will be too late and close to dinner time.

 

Susie: AWWWWW! You dont let us do anything we like!

 

Dad: (sternly) Kids, thats enough! None of you are being content with the blessings the Lord has given you. When you complain, you are telling God he doesnt know how to take care of you or meet your needs. It says that you know more than God, and it shows that you dont trust God! Do you believe that God loves and cares for you?

 

Eddie: (Contrite) Yes Sir.

 

Susie: Yes Dad.

 

Kallie: Yes Daddy.

 

Dad: Then you need to show it by being content with what He has provided for you. When you complain about what God had given you, you are sinning against Him!

 

Kallie: Oh no!

 

Dad: Oh yes! So, when you are tempted to whine or complain, instead think of all the ways God has cared for you. Lets practice. Eddie, what is one way God has provided for you?

 

Eddie: Ummm, well, Hes given us nice sunny weather for our vacation.

 

Mom: Thats right. Susie, what has God provided for you?

 

Susie: Good, healthy food that helps us grow strong.

 

Mom: Yes! Kallie, what about you?

 

Kallie: A kind Mom and Dad that love us too.

 

Dad: Good job, kids. Doesnt that make you feel better?

 

Kallie, Susie, and Eddie together: Yes!

 

Dad: Good! Kallie pointed out something really important. God has put parents in your lives to care for you. Teachers too! When you complain to them, you are also sinning against God. Do you want to keep sinning against Him?

 

Eddie: No way!

 

Dad: I didnt think so! We should always remember Philippians 2:14-15, which says: Do all things without complaining and arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world. Can you guys try to do that?

 

All together: YEAH!
