Here’s a fun way to keep your team connected over the summer – have a digital scavenger hunt! This is a fun game that can be played in one evening or weekend, or carried out over several weeks throughout the summer. We’ve put together three suggestions for playing the game in very different ways. You can easily adapt these suggestions for adults, teens, or children to fit your ministry. |
How Does it Work?
All digital scavenger hunts follow the same basic plan. Participants are provided with a list of items that they need to photograph with a digital camera or camera phone. Often, the rules will require that the participants include themselves in the photos. The first person or group to photograph all the items on the list is the winner. You could also have judges choose the best photos as winners.
The game can last all summer if you assign a few different photos each week. Hand out the new assignments weekly, or if you’re not meeting regularly over the summer, use e-mail, Facebook, or text messaging. Be sure to have a way for everyone to see all the photos! To determine a winner, award points for creativity or difficulty of photos.Below we have three different versions of the game. Feel free to adapt these suggestions to fit the needs and personalities in your ministry.
Puppet Team Fun Hunt
In this hunt, team members must photograph a puppet along with each item or scene on the list. You could also use Peepers instead of full-size puppets. Challenge team members to create a unique “costume” for the Peepers and award extra points for originality. Another fun option would be to have puppeteers create sock puppets or paper bag puppets to star in their photos.
Ideas for your list:a one-way street sign, a green couch, a pay phone, a vanity license plate, a spotted dog, someone having a picnic, inside an elevator, wearing red shoes, at the pool, at your favorite restaurant, local landmarks, a leader at your church.
Children’s Ministry Photo Quest
For this game, kids are challenged to take one or two photos each week. With help from parents, they e-mail their photos to the children’s church leader before the next week’s meeting. This can be used for Sunday mornings or mid-week programs. The leader can share the photos with the group each week.
Provide each child with a “flat” version of the children’s ministry leader, or of a favorite character or person at church. This will probably be a printed photo or drawing which can be cut out and posed in each photo. For more explanation, do an internet search for “Flat Stanley.” This character must appear in each photo. To add some educational value to this game, you could choose items from Bible stories for your list. For example, a lion could represent the story of Daniel in the lion’s den. The photo could be posed at the zoo, with a toy stuffed lion, a lion statue, someone costumed as a lion, or even a book with a lion on the cover.
Ideas for your list:Daniel in the lion’s den, Noah’s ark, garden of Eden, the Christmas story, Jacob’s ladder, Joseph and the coat of many colors, Jonah and the whale, Esther becomes queen, David and Goliath, John the Baptist, Jesus walking on water, the parable of the sower.
Creative Scenes Challenge
In this challenge, teams will create photos that demonstrate a scene from a movie, book, or Bible story. They can use props, costumes, and all their creativity to make their own versions of classic scenes. If it is difficult for team members to get together during the week, use this challenge for special events such as retreats, lock-ins, and road trips, or allow time during a weekly meeting for the teams to carry out the challenge.
Ideas for your list:Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, Snow White, Sherlock Holmes, Lord of the Rings, Green Eggs and Ham, Sesame Street, American Idol, Moses crossing the Red Sea, David &Goliath, the Nativity, Jesus healing a leper.
