Using Music in Kids’ Ministry

Using Music in Kids’ Ministry
Music can engage and uplift kids and uniquely illustrate spiritual points for you.

Leaders and parents are always looking for good music with a positive message for the kids in their care. In “the Right Mix” Concentrate in the back of the Think Orangebook, we highlight the different types of music we intentionally create for our curricula to help make our message stick in fun and fresh ways.

Faith Songs

Always Christian in theme, but may not be the same as contemplative worship.

*Designed to celebrate faith and a relationship with God

Virtue Songs

These are “crossover songs” written for every home and any kid’s environment, including school.

*Designed to teach a character principle

Activity Songs

These are neutral and may even be non-specific in message. They are made to be FUN!

*Designed to engage a child’s imagination and keep their attention

Bible Story Songs

*Designed to amplify the message of a Bible story with kids

Want to create a custom Children’s Worship CD to hand out to volunteers and parents? You can purchase a Mechanical License and a Master License to burn multiple copies of the songs you use.

*The Mechanical License is provided by the record company who owns the rights to the original song.

*The Master License is provided by the record company that recorded the Master version of the song you will be copying.

NOTE:  These licenses are much less expensive than purchasing multiple copies of your music. See Amber Sky Records for more details.

How do you creatively and intentionally use a variety of music in your ministry? How do you get good crossover music into the hands of parents and other adults in your community (like teachers and coaches)?

The Dance Floor Effect

This weekend at the reception of a family wedding, I noticed that the most natural place for all different ages of people to mix and mingle was the dance floor. They were attracted by the music and the energy of classics like “YMCA” and the more current “Cupid Shuffle.” This can be true of the music we use in our ministries, too. I’m reposting part of a friend’s blog about how music helps us crossover and overlap church to home:

“Most parents are more likely to engage by playing music in their home or car than leading a formal devotional time with their kids. But music can plant seeds of faith in the lives of ALL family members, teach them Scripture and principles of truth, while having fun. How?

SHARE:  Share your playlist with parents. Post it on your ministry Web site or Facebook Fan Page. Make sure songs are listed on take-home handouts you pass out. What about creating a “Today’s Playlist” board where your parents can see it at drop off and pick up?

SHOW:  Show your parents where to purchase the music. Most of the children’s worship songs we select are not easily found on iTunes or bought on just one CD. Show parents where they can purchase the same music that their kids love to sing with you at church.

(Estimated to be available in Fall 2010, Amber Sky Records will have a new feature where you can post your playlist for families to easily access and purchase music from!)

Let’s call this the Dance Floor Effect. If parents play the same music at home and in the car, the kids will know the songs and participate more when they are played on Sunday in our ministries! Better still, families are more likely to develop an everyday faith and rhythm as they go about their day.

How do you Share your playlist and Show parents where to get the songs you’re using at church? What else have you seen music do to help make our message stick? Does this change in student ministry?
